In 2019 I changed jobs and moved to Washington from California. As a part of my old job part of our compensation was gift codes. Because I left in November of 2019 the codes I received in compensation were not processed until 2020. I received a W2 from my old company in California, they paid the taxes on the codes and I can see the withholdings on the W2.

Do I need to file nonresident California taxes even when I was in the state of Washington by the end of 2019 and all of 2020? The approximate value of the gift codes is $1375.

Yes, you would file a Non-Resident State Return to California if California Tax was withheld on your W-2, which should be refunded to you.

If no California Tax was withheld, though, the $1375 is below the Filing Requirement for California, so you wouldn't need to file a California return.
