I lost my California job in April 2020 and moved to New York. I have been collecting employment from California up to middle of 2021 as a New York resident. Will I need to file state tax return to both California and New York?
Thank you.
Yes ... you will file a part year CA & part year NY returns only reporting the income earned/received while you lived there which means you must allocate the unemployment between the 2 states when asked in the state interviews.
I have been NewYork resident since April 2020. Do I have to file tax return both in New York and California for the Unemployment benefits received from California for year 2021?
Thank you.
No. Per the State of California, unemployment compensation is nontaxable for California state purposes. Therefore, you do not have to file a California nonresident return. You do, however, have to pay New York tax as a resident on all of your income. New York considers unemployment income as taxable income.
Please see California Unemployment for more information.
Sorry ... I missed the 2020 CA reference ... I am so used to only looking at income for 2021. You have no CA return to file just NY.
