Did California residency end the day my Michigan lease started?

I moved from Cali to Michigan in March 2020. Even though I was in Michigan, I kept my Cali lease going until the end of July 2020.

At first I moved in with my parents. But by May 2020 I moved into my new rental home (which I've been at ever since). Soon after I got my Michigan's drivers licensed and switched the car over to Michigan as well.

When did my Cali residency officially end?

Your CA residency ended on the day before you arrived in MI with the intent of making MI your permanent, primary home (your "domicile" in tax terminology).  See Example (5) on page 6 of this California tax publication for an analogous situation:
