Most people see their refund go down, sometimes by a lot, after entering a second W-2. This is because we start you off with the full Standard Deduction, which we subtract from the income you’ve entered so far.
- You don’t get this deduction with each W-2 you enter, just the first one. This means your second W-2 will appear to be taxed more, but what’s really happening is that you’re getting a more accurate picture of your income.
If you haven't already filed your return:
- Open (continue) your return if you don't already have it open
- Search for W-2 and select the Jump to link in the search results
- On the Your W-2 info so far screen, select Add another W-2
- Enter the information from the new W-2 on the following screens
If you already e-filed, you'll have to wait until your return is either accepted or rejected.
- If rejected, you can add the W-2 as previously described before resubmitting or paper-filing your return
- If accepted (or if you already paper-filed), you'll need to amend your return to add another W-2
