Changing MFJ Fed return to MFS to support MFS state returns.

TT says; Prepare a mock Married Filing Separately (MFS) return for each taxpayer. This is for your records only and will be used to generate separate state returns for each person. The mock federal returns aren't filed.

How is the change from MFJ to MFS on the copied Fed return accomplished as there are no steps to follow from TT.

Why couldn't this be done automatically by TT?

Also there is no comparison of the 2 filing methods for the state MFJ vs. MFS to even compare if this is worth the hassle. Can you even complete the state return as MFJ overriding the TT dialog?

Really frustrated with the lack of clarity and instructional content here

Changing MFJ Fed return to MFS to support MFS state returns.

We do not have the information to determine the best filing status. It does take some time to create three tax returns by setting up three different accounts, on your part, in TurboTax Online. It 's important to check state rules if you file jointly or separately and whether you have that option on the state return because each state has their own rules.

Once you see the results from all of the tax returns, you can figure out which way to file based on the overall plus or minus results.  The article below does provide great insight to help you. Review the gains or losses on separate returns because tax law does have penalties for choosing this filing status (credits, deductions, etc).

For TurboTax Desktop once you have your joint return completed you can open Forms, then search for 'What' and select the What-if Worksheet for a view of the difference between filing jointly or separately.
