TurboTax determines your state tax return needed based on what you enter in the My Info/ Personal Info section and your income sources. If you feel that TurboTax has chosen the resident state incorrectly, go over your entries in the My Info/Personal Info section. Generally, the state in which you live at the end of the tax year is your resident state.
According to the California Franchise Tax Board,
You’re a resident if either apply:
- Present in California for other than a temporary or transitory purpose
- Domiciled in California, but outside California for a temporary or transitory purpose
There are more factors for determining residency. Visit Guidelines for Determining Resident Status (FTB Publication 1031) for more details.
If you are treated as a California resident, you will be taxed by California on all of your income regardless of the state of its source. You may need to file a nonresident state return for other states where you earned income depending on the state and the amount. Even if you aren't required to file in the nonresident state, you should file if you had taxes withheld for that state.
