As a retiree do I need to pay Michigan state taxes? My wife and I moved to Michigan, from Illinois after retiring.

Yes.
Unless your retirement income in solely from Social Security, military or railroad pensions, you do pay state income tax in Michigan. All income reported on 1099-R is taxable.
