I am trying to figure out how to file for the unemployment tax exclusion. The software updated and automatically shows the new amount. However, Michigan is suggesting filing an amendment. When I run the program to file the amended return. I had to enter into four places that I was applying the unemployment tax exclusion. Turbo Tax already had the difference amounts shown when I opened the amended return(instead of 0).
Which brings me to what happened. After it passed error check the program said it didn't detect any changes. Obviously due to the program update already fixing the values there really wasn't. So, my question remains do I need to file an amended return????????? Or is Michigan or Turbo Tax taking care of it?
Again according to Turbo Taxes database I am supposed to have to file an amended return. Also according to whatever I could find online and on the state site.

According to the MI Treasury website, we do have to file an amended return for the State (assuming your original filing occurred before the law changed). What you described is different than what I experienced. When I clicked amend return, it automatically applied the exclusion and updated the amounts. I didn't have to enter much of anything, except for a description of why I was amending, and it required me to change direct deposit to paper check.
I'm struggling with the process a bit too, though. We are not supposed to amend Federal but in order to amend Michigan, TT amends both. I know I can set the eFile choice for Federal so it won't file that one. But what's weird is the Michigan amendment attaches the Federal form 1040-X as though you have filed it. I'm not comfortable with that. Just mentioning this to say that the whole process is not very straightforward. You might want to try starting over with the amend return part, if you can.
Yes it was an early file. Anyway, mine was filled in right away. It was also just the description boxes for amendment reasoning. I made it all the way through when i wen to view and print forms it came up as federal 1040. I am not trying to amend that.
Your description says that this is attached to the Michigan form. I guess if that is the case I feel slightly more comfortable sending it. I had just glanced at the first page or two of the documents when I went to print it and stopped short of filing it. I decided I should try and find out if this is normal with Turbo Tax before filing it.
One clarification that might be helpful for you. On one of the later TT screens (after it reviews), there are 3 steps . For Step #3 after you click "start", the next part shows Federal E-file and Michigan E-file. For Federal, I clicked "change" and selected "I'm not ready to file". Once you do that, the View Forms button that appears a couple screens later only includes the documents for Michigan. When I view the forms that will be submitted to Michigan, the last one is the Fed 1040-X. On the one hand, it feels dishonest to file the Michigan amendment with that attached since I am not filing it with the IRS. On the other hand, Michigan Treasury is encouraging us to use our original software and E-File the amendment, so they must be ok with what's being submitted. I'm still on the fence about this.
If you don't change the E-File for Federal, you will end up filing both amendments. And the Fed has asked us not to amend unless we would be eligible for tax credits (earned income, etc) that we were not eligible for with the original filing.
I don't have this problem and I don't use TurboTax to file.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around this issue -
how can anyone amend if the TurboTax updates changed your tax return already?
Where are the original amounts coming from?
In any case, always print your form 1040-X -- federal or State -- and review it
and understand it before you submit.
Don't submit an incorrect form 1040-x or incorrect state amendment that you only hope is correct.
