Was Alabama resident, went to south dakota for a little under 2 months, then moved back. How should I refer to myself in regards to residency?

My School and an agent at Fafsa told me that my residency counted as Alabama and since I never switched over my license my alabama residency was the date it was issued, but I dont know if that translates over for tax purposes.

Although there is no clear-cut way to declare residency, the IRS’s primary deciding factor has to do with your intent for your move, meaning whether you intended for it to be temporary or permanent, and your subsequent actions to prove this intent.

A move in and of itself does not necessarily end residency and it is unlikely that the short move that you are describing would be considered a permanent move from Alabama.

The following is a helpful TurboTax article that provides actions (at the bottom of the page) that you can take to (or actions to avoid) when proving temporary or permanent moves: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/tax-tips/Tax-Planning-and-Checklists/Multiple-States---Where-T....
