AL drivers license shows as "XXXXXXX". Will e-filing show the actual numbers to Dept of Revenue, or do I need to mail in? The past couple of years I showed NO ID or Drivers License, and it printed out blank in those areas, so I could fill them in by hand and mail in the return.

No, you do not need to mail your state tax return. The e-file data will transfer to the state because some states do require identification such as your drivers license. The print copy is security protocol and is not a reflection of what is sent to your state through e-file.

Thank you. That's what I needed to know.
I need to file some of my state returns on paper. But when I print the Form 40, all the DL info shows up as X's. I went into forms on the software, and it shows as X's there as well, but I can double click and find the actual numbers on the worksheet. BUT I cannot change the X's on the Form 40 so they print out correctly. I'm concerned that if I paper mail these in, AL will reject it.
This is not a problem on KY or GA forms.
Please try to update the software.
How do I update my TurboTax CD/Download software program?

If that does not work, there is a link at the bottom of this article for manual updates.

Thanks - I did that before and again tonight. Software is up to date. Now what? <help>
AL is one state that requires a drivers license to e-file. It is not required for paper mailing and is actually discouraged due to safety issues. When you mail your return, you want to use tracking to ensure your forms safely arrived. E-filing is a safer and faster way to file. I recommend you e-file. AL handles other state returns and credits nicely.
Thanks Amy. I’ve already sent everything in, but I wish I had gotten this answer the first time instead of “update your software”.
I have 5 returns to file for my family. Paying $20 for every one of those state e-files (especially for working children getting $13 refunded) doesn’t make much sense for me, though I’m sure TurboTax would love another $80 from me. 😉
