Additions to Federal Income, Part-year

I am filing two state returns as I moved from NYC to DC in 2017. On my DC state return, it is asking "

Additions to Federal Income, Part-year
You had adjustments to your federal adjusted gross income of $1,621. Enter the portion of these adjustments that applies to the time you resided outside DC.

I am not sure what this asking? Can someone help?

Ahh, it was moving expenses. However, I thought I read that this should be a DC adjustment and not a NY on one of the screen prompts? Thank you!

The Moving Expenses are allocated to the state you moved TO so DC would be correct.

Thank you, could you advise me on this question as well? Not sure what it is asking for...

State and Local Tax Deduction, Part-year
Enter the portion of your state and local tax or state and local sales tax deduction from federal Schedule A, line 5, that was paid to DC.

Yes, this question is asking if you are itemizing deductions- if so, how much income tax did you pay to DC in 2017.  IF you itemized, you can find the amount to DC on your W2 Box 17

I am having the same problem. I moved from DC to MD and I need to know if I should put the state wages amount as the adjustment?

Additions to Federal Income, Part-year

If you can identify the adjustment (most likely it would be Student Loan Interest, Moving Expenses, IRA Deduction) you have to allocate the adjustment amount either to DC or NY.  For example, if it was student loan interest that you paid monthly, you could divide it by percentage of time at each location, if it were Moving Expenses, it is a New York adjustment.

I have this exact same question (moved from DC to NY), how do I determine the answer to this?

You need to take a look at your Form 1040 Schedule 1 lines 11 to 25.  This is where you will see the adjustments to your income.  This will allow you to know what adjustments you need to allocate between the states where you lived.

Depending on what the adjustment represents, it may need to be allocated between the states based on the months you lived in each one or it may need to be allocated only to one state.

If you are using TurboTax Online, use the following steps to preview your Form 1040:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
    • Preview your entire return: Select Print Center and then Print, Save, or Preview This Year's Return (you may be asked to register or pay first).
    • View only your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu.

If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, click Forms in the upper right corner to see your Form 1040 and other forms.

Why do state taxes go up once you've allocated your adjustments?

What if the adjustment is on line 10?

Can you clarify which state returns are you filing? and which form are you referring to?
