My parents moved from CA to MO at the end of March. My father passed away in September and my mother moved back to CA for the remainder of the year. TT can't quite deal with this scenario. All in all, it was a 7-month in CA and 5 month in MO situation. The questions about residency and when-moved imply that only one move was made. The state taxes are totally whacky and it is highly probably I answered some question wrong. I show CA with a tax payment of @ $275 and a MO tax payment of just under $1600, even though they spent more time in CA than MO. This can't be right. In the MO portion of TT, it wants to know how much their income was earned while in MO and then it wanted to know how much of it was earned by my father and how much by my mother. I think the calculations are messed up because it only thinks there was one move. Any thoughts?

There's no way to split up the residency between spouses without filing separate returns, which would probably negatively affect your income tax.
I would suggest you choose two periods of time, Jan to July for California and August to December for Missouri, as that would give you the proper time spent in both states for your Mother.
Yes, you're right, TurboTax does not compute well with a move-out and then back into a state within the same tax year.
I suggest you file the part-year Missouri joint return with the March through September dates.
Also file the part-year state return for California jointly. You can report Jan-March as the dates, or use a 7-month stretch of Jan - Aug.
Since both state returns should be filed jointly, only the income you allocate should matter. The program might ask for each person's income to be allocated, but just make sure the CA income is allocated to the CA return, and the MO income to the MO return. Since they were residents of each state at the time they lived/earned in that state, no income should be double taxed.

thanks. I'm not sure how to get into TT to give that information. TT askes questions about when they became residents, when they moved, what state they came from, etc. I'm still now quite sure how to answer those questions. The disparity in the proposed taxes for each state tells me that I'm not answering the questions correctly to give TT an accurate picture of their tenure in each state. My mom spent 7 months in CA, 5 in MO. My dad 3 in CA, 5 in MO, died in MO. Yet the tax in CA is @ $275 and the tax in MO is $1600. Clearly TT (as well as me) are confused. Then there are the questions about part-time resident as nonresident. Depending on how I answer that, the MO tax went way up to $4000!
