I recieved a 1099g from the state of illinois for a state refund i recieved in 2016. I have not recieved any income (i began school jan 10th 2016) and thus i dont need to file a tax return for the year. My question is what do i do with the 1099g? Do i need to file a tax return just for the 1099g? Or do i just keep it for records sake."

Just keep it for your records.  Since you have no other income and are not required to file, there's nothing you need to do with it.

You will enter it into the federal return, and TurboTax will automatically transfer it to your CA return. View the original article here, or read on:

If you're using the TurboTax mobile app, follow these instructions.

If not:

  1. Open or continue your tax return.

  2. Search for unemployment compensation and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results.
  3. On the Did you receive unemployment or paid family leave benefits in 2019? screen, answer Yes.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your 1099-G information.
