Unable efile State return after successfully efiled Fed return

I filed my Federal Return last night and accepted.  Now I want to file my State Return but Turbo tax won't let me file the State. It is asking me to select the Federal Return but I already filed it. Help!

    I have paid to File my NC State tax. I have to file by mail.  As per instructions .How do I get my credit back on my card?

    The North Carolina Individual Income Tax Return Form D-400 is not yet available for e-filing.  It is estimated to be available on 02/24/2022

    Go to this TurboTax website for North Carolina state forms availability - https://care-cdn.prodsupportsite.a.intuit.com/forms-availability/turbotax_nc_online_individual.html

     

    If you want to e-file your federal tax return now then change how you file the NC state return.  This assumes that all of the forms and schedules included in your federal tax return are available for e-filing.

    If using the TurboTax online editions click on File on the left side of the online program screen.  On Step 3 of the File section click on Start or Revisit.  Select the button File by Mail.  Then change the filing status of the state return.

    After the federal return is e-filed and accepted by the IRS you can e-file the state return when it is available for e-filing.  Just use the same procedure and change the state return back to e-filing.

    Hope this helps. State return not accepted after federal e-file. Went back to page that asked if e-file or mail for federal taxes.  It let me select "mail".  Did get error message that already transmitted, but at top of page was option to choose mail state taxes.  It seems to have worked.  Will look at another product if problems with state package continues.  Did request refund for state e-file charge.

    Fed return efiled in early February. Could not efile state return then because Quicken advised the state had not yet issued a needed form but that form would be provided as soon as available. Then email from Quicken said tax form was ready. Went in to complete state return but it now says I cannot efile the state return because the fed return must be efiled first. BUT I already efiled the fed return. ??? This is a flaw in Quicken software???

    I e-filed my federal return this morning successfully. One hour later, I paid 20.00 for state e-filing but turbo won't let me e-file my state. I would like a refund and if this can't be fixed, I will use another tax system. HELP!!

    What message did you receive for the failed state return e-file?  Are there forms or schedules in the state tax return that are not yet available for the state return?

    I want to file my state taxes and I already filed my federal taxes. Turbotax wants me to refile the federal tax return. Help!

    Did any of you have state tax-exempt retirement distributions/payouts in 2021? In 2020, TT wouldn’t e-file certain states’ tax returns after the federal e-filing was done. It took several weeks of forum messages and calls to TT tech support before TT straightened it out.

    Just e-filed our Fed tax return and trying to e-file our state return and TT won't let me.  Says I have to e-file the Federal and that is already done.

    It is now 3/10/2023 and this problem still exists!!!!  What is TurboTax doing about it.  This is so frustrating (along with problems I am having printing the returns.... I select "print" and they just "save" instead).  So now there is absolutely no way for me to file!  I spent 30 minutes on a call with a TurboTax rep and they couldn't fix the printing problem.  Supposedly escalating the issue, and calling me back... but its been 7 hours now, and nothing.  We may all need to switch software for next year (and maybe even this year!).

    I found a workaround. Keep pressing buttons, trying different routes through TurboTax. As I recall, I just said to file again. After a bit, TT told me that Fed was already filed and accepted (true), then went ahead and filed State after I paid them for the privilege. Just pretend you haven't filed Fed, start fresh. If that doesn't work, try something different. Something worked for me: Fed one day, State a week later.

    I am having the same problem with TurboTax Deluxe desktop version for tax year 2022. it seems that the software bug is back. Support told me to print it out and file by mail.

    @stv23   This is a state requirement.  State taxes can not be submitted till after Federal is accepted if you don't file them simultaneously.  Has your federal return be accepted?  Are there any errors in your return that need to be fixed that would show up in the review process?  Some times it is time of day you try to file that the state is not working.  First check your return for errors, you can not efile a return that has any errors.  You also can not efile a return that has any overrides to calculated data.  Go back through the review process and also check to see if your federal return was accepted.

    1. Open the File menu.
    2. Select Check E-file status.
    3. Or, go to the File tab and select the Check E-file Status header.

    My Federal taxes were submitted and and accepted and acknowledged in the TT program and by email before I attempted to file my state tax form. There are no errors in the tax returns. I have rebooted the computer and tried on multiple days to efile the state return.

    I've been able to get to the Intuit payment form, but this won't allow me to proceed.  I can sometimes see a "Next" button below the screen, but tabbing to it sends me to an Intuit account information page.  I still can't pay my $25 there.  Guess I'll just print the forms and save myself the money!  Given the number of folks having problems with this, Intuit must be losing a bunch of money.  Their programmers need to be smacked over the head!  Very poor quality software.

    And I have seen posts about this very same problem posted 2 tax seasons ago!
