The processing times for state returns varies from state to state. Some states have noted that they will take extra time this year to process returns and issue refunds. The reason is due to added measures to protect against fraud. You'll find a list of states that have notated timeframes below. And if you click the name of each state, you will be taken to the page to track your refund status for that state.

  • ALABAMA Please allow 8-12 weeks to receive your refund
  • CALIFORNIA - Normal processing is up to 2 weeks for e-filed and 4 weeks for paper filed returns. See here processing time for timeframes of those that require extra processing time.
  • COLORADO - May delay refunds for some taxpayers by up to 60 days beyond normal processing time.
  • DELAWARE - Began processing returns the third week of February and can take 4 to 12 weeks
  • GEORGIA - Asks that most taxpayers allow 90 business days to process a return and issue a refund, following receipt of their returns
  • KANSAS - Taxpayers expecting refunds that filed electronically can expect a deposit in 10 to 14 business days. Taxpayers expecting a refund that filed using a paper form should allow at least 16 to 20 weeks to receive a refund back by mail.
  • HAWAII - Allow 9-10 weeks after you mail or e-file your tax return and an additional 2 weeks for paper refund checks.
  • ILLINOIS - You can expect your refund to take longer than previous years as we continue our efforts to prevent identity theft and fraud.
  • LOUISIANA -The expected refund processing time for returns filed electronically is up to 60 days. For paper returns, taxpayers should expect to wait 12 to 14 weeks.
  • MASSACHUSETTS - Takes 4 to 6 weeks to process e-filed returns. And 8-10 for paper filed returns
  • MISSISSIPPI - Ordinarily, within ten weeks after we receive your completed return, we will mail your refund check.  Therefore, allow at least ten weeks for your refund to arrive before contacting us.
  • MISSOURI will delay most refunds, however, no timeline has been given.
  • MONTANA - For returns filed in January with no problems noted, refunds can sometimes be issues within a week. However, refunds from returns filed in April can sometimes take 8 weeks, even if there is no problem with the return, as the state manages its cash resources as it meets all of its obligations. The timing of refunds is also affected by the Department's measures to prevent identity theft and refund fraud
  • NORTH CAROLINA - Due to enhanced identity theft protection measures, some refunds may take longer than normal, which is 6-8 weeks for electronically filed returns and 12 weeks for paper returns.
  • NEW JERSEY - Did not start processing tax returns until March 1st. Up to 4 weeks for e-filed and 12 weeks for paper filed. Returns that require manual processing may take 12 weeks or longer whether the return was filed electronically or on paper.
  • NEW MEXICO - The Department generally processes electronically filed returns claiming a refund within 6 to 8 weeks.  A paper return received by the Department takes 8 to 12 weeks to process.
  • PENNSYLVANIA - Please allow 8-10 weeks for processing
  • VIRGINIA - Takes up to four weeks to process e-filed tax returns and 8 weeks for paper filed
  • VERMONT - Began processing tax returns the first week of February and have an expected time frame of 6-8 weeks, while paper returns typically take at least 8-12 weeks.
  • WEST VIRGINIA - Due to the extremely large volume of returns, please allow at least 8 weeks for your return to be processed before calling to speak with someone concerning the status of your refund
  • WISCONSIN - Our strong fraud and error safeguards could delay some returns up to 12 weeks

Texas has no state income taxes. Neither does Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming.

Which states don't have income tax?

    The Iowa DOR website says:

"The anticipated time frame for refund processing is 30-45 days. ... The majority of refunds are issued before the end of May.  Various things can delay return processing. A few examples are mailing a paper return, not choosing direct deposit, having errors on a return, missing documentation, and returns identified for additional review."

First you need to be sure it was successfully filed.  Here's how:

First, if you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted.  If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking in your Online account at the Tax Home.    Does it say "accepted" there?

Or did you choose to file by mail instead?  TurboTax does not mail it for you.  If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it.

I presume you are asking about a state refund, since that is the topic of this thread.

The main determinate of how long it takes is what state.  There are over 40 state tax agencies, each doing its own thing.  Some states are fairly quick with refunds, while other states (such as WV, WI, NC, GA, LA, AL, and others) can take a long time processing returns--even several weeks--as they crack down on detecting fraudulent returns.  You may be able to get an idea about how long it takes in your state from the FAQs at your state's tax agency website as I will mention below.

Of course, you need to be sure it was successfully filed.  Here's how:

First, if you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted.  If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking in your Online account at the Tax Home.

Or did you choose to file by mail instead?  TurboTax does not mail it for you.  If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it.

The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund and has a link for your state.

TIP:   While you're at your state's tax website, also look for a statement or FAQ that may say about how long it takes to get a refund in your state and how to long to wait before phoning the state tax agency.  Many states have such information on their websites.

The list at the start of this thread topic is an old list from 2018.  It's 2 years old and not current.

Did you efile?  First make sure the state return was efiled successfully and accepted.   Did you use Online TurboTax?  If so, log in and at the Tax Home what is shown for the state return status?   Which of these terms--accepted, rejected, printed, started, ready to mail, or what?

Or if you chose to file by printing and mailing, did you actually mail it?  TurboTax does not mail it for you.

There is no information on the Oregon state tax refund website regarding the length of time it takes for the state to process a tax refund.

Go to this website to track your Oregon state tax refund - https://revenueonline.dor.oregon.gov/tap/_/

We don't know what your situation is and what you are asking in regard to Ohio, so it's hard to comment on your statement.    And I don't know what the context is for your question about printing and mailing.

Did you efile an Ohio state return?  If so, was the efile accepted?  If you used Online TurboTax, you can check the efile status at the Tax Home to see if it was accepted.

Or do you plan to print and mail instead of efiling?  If you make that choice, then you have to do the print, sign, date, and mail it yourself.  TurboTax does not mail it for you.   Normally it's best to efile instead of mailing a paper return.

"Statement from the Ohio Department of Taxation: Taxpayers who request a direct deposit for an original return may expect a refund within 15 business days. Paper returns will take approximately 8 to 10 weeks to process."

I could not get through the process of paying the $25 by credit card for filing the state return.
If that had any relation to state slowness, then the website should say so.
Otherwise, it may be a bug that needs fixing in your software.
But, instead of paying $25.00 or $40.00, I will simply file the printed copy with the state.
