Stopping a Schedule C from generating

I received a 1099-Misc for $645 for participating in a research study.  So I should not be considered self-employed.  How do I get Turbotax from generating a Schedule C?

Generally, income from a 1099-MISC form is considered self-employment income but here are the instructions to enter the form so it is not included in self-employment income. First you can delete the 1099-MISC form that you already entered and then enter it again.

  1. Launch TurboTax and select Wages and Income
  2. Scroll down to Other Common Income and select Edit
  3. Select the trash that is next to the 1099-MISC form that you already entered to delete it
  4. Select Add Form
  5. Enter your 1099-MISC and select Continue
  6. Enter Paid Leave for the description and Continue
  7. Select None of these apply on the next screen
  8. Select only the tax year for this 1099-MISC and Continue
  9. Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money and Continue
  10. Select No, if you don’t have any more forms to enter and Continue.

You will be able to see this income on Line 8 of your 1040. When you pay for TurboTax you will be able to view your forms.

No, I did not get the answer in time to file my return on time.  The number did not appear on line 8 of the 1040.  But there also was NO Schedule C, which was my goal.  Turbotax said my return passed inspection, was correct and that it should be filed.  I also got an email later that said the return had been accepted.  I suppose that at some future date, someone at the IRS will try to squabble over a $648 1099-misc.  I spent many extra hours trying to get the return to do the right thing.  There has to be a better more efficient way to answer client's questions.

Did the $648 get reported on your tax return?

Keep your 1099-MISC and all of your tax documents together.

You can always file an amended return to report it if it did not get reported.
