How to enter self-employed health insurance premiums in Home and Business

To go to the section of the tax return to enter this information, use these steps:

  • Click on Search
  • This opens a box where you can type in “self-employed health insurance deduction” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to self-employed health insurance deduction
  • Click on the blue “Jump to self-employed health insurance deduction” link

The result will show you a summary page of any Schedule C businesses you have entered.  Edit the business information and go to the Other Common Business Expenses section.  Find Insurance Payments and click Start to enter your information.

Suggestion didn't work.   It led to Business Income.   When I click Update (I didn't see a Start button), I keep getting a message that self-employed health insurance must be entered for each business.   I have only one Schedule C.   How do I enter the self-employed health insurance deduction?

Found how to enter self-employed health insurance.   I'm not exactly sure what I did.   It certainly wasn't intuitive.

@edrcpa    Self Employed health Insurance does not go directly on Schedule C so it will not reduce your Net Profit or self employment tax.

If your health ins exceeds your net self-employment income it gets split. An amount equal to your net self-employment income goes on Form 1040 Schedule 1 line 17 (to 1040 line 10) and the remainder gets added in to medical expenses on Schedule A.

And do you get Social Security?  Medicare plan B payments are qualified as Self-employed medical insurance premiums and should be entered under Business instead of in the Social Security Benefits entry area.  So go back and take it off your SSA-1099 entry.

Which version are you using?  Online Premium or the Desktop program?

Thank you for your reply, VolvoGirl!

I understand the tax law concerning self-employed health insurance.   Before retiring, I was in tax practice for decades and used CCH ProSystem fx software but the CCH software is too expensive to use for only my own individual income tax returns.  My question concerned data entry in the desktop version of TurboTax.

The place to enter self-employed health insurance in TurboTax is well-hidden.   Any instructions I found were unhelpful.   I kept getting a message that self-employed health insurance had to be entered for each business separately but a list of businesses wasn't displayed.   I kept going in circles until I somehow stumbled on the appropriate data entry page.

Incidentally, today, TurboTax stopped working.   It wouldn't load although still installed.   I had to uninstall the software and download the software again.

The early program is very buggy and when they try to fix one thing they break another.
