We made one of our estimated tax payments (the one due in January, 2023 for the 4th quarter of 2022) and incorrectly indicated the tax year as being for 2023, but it was actually for 2022. Does this matter? When you input your estimated payments in Turbotax, you put the date of the payment, which was in fact a few days earlier than the due date, but the tax year was specified incorrectly as for 2023. Does anyone know how to change it after the fact or whether it matters?

You can try calling the IRS Help line, and ask them to make the correction.

I've been with an agent for over 75 minutes so far today while she researches how to change the designated tax year for that estimated payment. She found and acknowledged the payment within the first 5 minutes of the call, but has been returning to me every 5 to 7 minutes to tell me she is still reading and researching how to make the change to that payment. We've been connected now for 71 minutes and still going....
Assuming you are speaking about entering an estimated tax payment in TurboTax in the "Deductions and Credits" section. There is no option to say the tax payment is applied to tax year 2023 in the 2022 tax return. The date entered is the date paid which could be January 2023. However, when you enter an estimated payment in the "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid" topic it will reduce your 2022 tax.
Once you enter a payment it reduces the 2022 tax bill no matter what date you enter as the date paid. So the date entered doesn't matter on your tax return for the tax due but the date(s) entered could affect an underpayment penalty if there is one calculated on your return.
I'm a bit confused about this. When you make estimated payments you are supposed to include a 1040-ES form. Those forms are different each year showing the tax year in big bold letters at the top. If you included a 2022 1040-ES it should automatically be recorded for that tax year. My confusion comes from the fact that the 2023 1040-ES does not include a voucher due in January 2023. The first quarterly voucher is not due until April. So I guess you need to verify what 1040-ES voucher you sent with this payment.
When you pay your estimated payment on line, you need to select that it is an estimated payment and the year to which the payment applies.
My understanding is Pacificlots selected 2023 instead of 2022 when paying online. The best approach to resolve this is to call, unfortunately.
