Business Street Address?

I filed my business address using a registered agent under their address. I work and park from my home in the same state, different town. So basically I am filed with the secretary of state in a different town, but everything else is under and done from my home address. Which should I put in as my business address? Are there any other issues I might run into doing the rest of my taxes where I will need to know which address to use?

Use the address where you would receive mail for your business as your business address.  As far as taxes are concerned, your business address is where you would perform your work.  If you work from home, use your home address.  If you operate from a separate location, use that address.

The only instances that come to mind with regard to business address would be where you enter the initial business profile information or if you have multiple places that are considered home offices (such as if you moved during the year and had two home addresses, each with a home office).

It does not matter that your officially registered address is under a registered agent's address.

I receive most mail to my home address, but just one or two pieces per year to the registered agent address. I should pretty much only use my home address where I work from and get most mail delivered?

Yes, use the address where you get most of your mail at!

Business Street Address?

I actually have a situation similar to instance that you described in this post ... I have a business (sole proprietor LLC - working from home, no physical office location) that is registered in Washington, DC at my address there.  This summer, I moved from Washington, DC to Florida.  I need to change my personal address to FL but not the business address (although that does need to be changed from my DC address to the DC registered agent address).   I'll be moving the business to Florida this year but for 2022 tax purposes I need to pay DC taxes on business income despite my personal move.  Can you provide any instructions on how to do this?

You are able to change the business address on your Schedule C entry in TurboTax.

To do this in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:

  1. Within your tax return, use the magnifying glass icon to search Schedule C
  2. Click Edit for the business you need to update
  3. Scroll down to Business Summary and click Edit for Your XXX Info
  4. Click Edit under the Business Address and correct the entry

Thanks so much for the quick reply!  One follow up question.  Do you know if making that change on the Schedule C will ensure that DC taxes will be calculated based on that address in the state portion of TurboTax ?

Yes, the address that you enter on the federal Schedule C will be transferred to the same form for DC.

Thank you again for all your assistance!  Three final questions.  Before I made any changes to address (so I was a DC resident with a DC business all year as far as TurboTax was concerned) my refund from DC was a certain amount.  When I changed my residency to Florida (in the Personal Info section) the DC refund went to 0.  Since I’ve been paying estimated taxes all year, I’m not sure why that would happen.  When I then updated the Personal Info with move information to include that I had been living in DC through May 15th, a refund came back, but, was 5% less than the original refund amount.  So, Question 1:  Why would a refund go down when the software thought I was not living or owning a business in DC for all or part of the year?  When I then changed my business address (which had been updated automatically to the new Florida address) as per your great instructions – there was no change to the refund amount (still 5% less than before the address changes).  So, Q2, does that change not matter to calculations?  And then, final question, is there an actual form (or forms) I should look at to confirm that things are working?  So sorry for all the questions and sincerely grateful for all your help thus far and any assistance you might be able to provide!

When you had everything listed as a DC resident, were you getting a full refund?  Did you allocate income?

Hi there!  Thanks so much for the response ... but I'm not entirely sure what you mean ... When I had everything listed as a DC resident, I was getting back a small portion of what I had paid in estimated taxes (what seemed to me an appropriate portion since I made a bit less money in 2002 than the previous year - which was what I was paying estimated taxes based on).  Also, what do you mean by allocate income?  Depending, hopefully I can get you what you need to help.  Appreciate it!  Oh, and also just noting, that when I'm referencing the refund amount, I'm referencing what is in the calculation at the top of the screen in turbo tax as opposed to any forms or final review.

When you change your address from one place to another it changes the type of return that you file.  You should be filing a part-year resident return for DC if you have any Florida income to separate out that you don't want to pay DC taxes on.  However, if all of your income is DC based then you can keep your DC resident return for 2022 and not even worry about the Florida address until 2022.

Changing your address on the DC resident return is reducing one of the credits that you're entitled to for living in DC.  And you are probably not entitled to them as a part-year resident.
