why is 1099-NEC requiring EIN

It worked fine 2 days ago and now it won't allow me to proceed without providing my payor's EIN (already entered their SSN) - they don't have one.

No one is supposed to issue a 1099-NEC without first getting an EIN from the IRS.  You should let your payor know that.

For now, go back to the 1099-NEC and change the number that you entered.  Enter it like this XX-XXXXXXX.  It won't matter if it is a social security number if you enter it in that format.
