What can I do when it won't accept the information from my 1099-R zip code?

It won't let me mail my return, just keeps asking me to fix my federal return.  How can I get out of this loop?

Try deleting the input on the zip code from your 1099-R and then re-entering it.  There could be a stray character or extra space that is causing the error.

If that doesn't rectify the message, you can also delete the input for that 1099-R form and re-enter it again. This may resolve the error and allow you to file.

The input would be under the Federal income section as follows:

  1. Select Income & Expenses
  2. Scroll down to All Income
  3. Select show more to the right of Retirement Plans & Social Security
  4. Select start/revisit to the right of IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  5. To enter additional 1099-R forms, simply select +Add Another 1099-R.  To delete, simply select Delete to the right of the applicable 1099-R form.

If TurboTax rejected your Form 1099-R ZIP code, make sure it is correct and in the correct format.  Make sure the city, state and zip code that you entered match the USPS records. (You can google this online).

Also delete your Form 1099-R and re-enter it. This often fixes issues with data fields.

If you are using TurboTax Online you can delete your Form 1099-R as follows:

  1. Go to "Tax Tools" in your left panel of your TurboTax screen, then
  2. Select "Tools" and
  3. under "Other Helpful Links
  4. select "Delete a Form."
  5. This will bring up all of your forms and you can click on "Delete" next to the Form "1099-R" that you want to delete.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can delete your Form 1099-R as follows:

  1. 1. Click on the "Forms Icon" on the top right of your screen to bring up  "Forms Mode
  2. 2. Choose your "Form 1099-R"from the list of forms in the left panel of your TurboTax screen
  3. 3. Use the "Delete Form" option at the bottom of your Form 1099-R that is displayed in your right panel of your TurboTax screen
  4. Select "Yes" to confirm the deletion of this form

You can get back to your Form 1099-R screens in TurboTax as follows to re-enter your Form 1099-R:

  1. Click on Search at the top right of your TurboTax screen
