The RMD I took on my Inherited Roth IRA (dad's death in 2014) is showing up as ordinary dividends instead of the intended RMD. I'm not sure how to correct that.

The RMD I withdrew from my inherited Roth IRA (from my father who died in 2014)  is showing up on my 2024 TurboTax form as ordinary dividends instead of as an RMD. The distribution code (Box 7) on my 1099R shows T and has for past years as well. I'm not sure how to correct the form so it shows as an RMD distribution.

The only way that the amount could show up on Form 1040 line 3b as ordinary dividends is if you entered it as a Form 1099-DIV instead of as a Form 1099-R.  Perhaps it's actually on line 4b, not on line 3b.

The amount should be included on Form 1040 line 4a but be excluded from taxable income on line 4b.  When entering the Form 1099-R as a Form 1099-R, make sure to indicate to TurboTax that the distribution was from an inherited account.  With the online version that is done by marking checkbox.  in the desktop version you must answer Yes when asked the horribly worded question that asks if the IRA was inherited from [financial institution].

First, delete the entire entry you made and start over. I can't think why this would show up as a ordinary dividend, but entering this in as a dividend 1099 DIV seems plausible as dmertz has pointed out. Let's try to list the steps correctly. So once your original entry is deleted, enter the 1099R using the following steps. .

  1. Go to Retirement Plans and Social Security in the income section of your return.
  2. Select IRA, Pension plans Withdrawals (1099R) etc.
  3. Record your 1099 R with Code T
  4. After you make your entry, there should be a follow-up screen asking if you inherited this. Here you will record the information on who you inherited this from.
  5. The next screen will ask what the RMD requirement was for this year.  if it is for the full amount of the distribution, list the full amount.
  6. Then there will be a follow-up screen. Here you can say that the entire distribution is applied to the December 31, 2024 RMD

This should clear your issue.
