tax-exempt interest

Box 8 of 1099-INT is tax-exempt interest income plus line 9 for specified private activity bond interest. On my 1099-int worksheet it wants the amount in box 8. But when I enter my state tax-exempt interest and out of state interest that total is the total interest before the box 9 amount is added in. So I get an error message that it doesn't agee. What do I do?

The amount of Box 9 is included in the amount in Box 8, so I'm not understanding where your error occurs?
