SSA-1099-SM

SSA-1099-SM following the instructions attached to it , Notice 703 that is on the SSA 1099 SM Worksheet

A. enter the total from Box 5

B. Multiply x .50 and enter on E.

Part of your ss maybe be taxable if  1, 2, 3 applies

and NONE of these apply, so the benefits are not taxable

But if none of your benefits are taxable but you must file a tax return - enter the total amount from A on the tax return

I had already entered my W-2 total in Turbo Tax and see a refund

After entering the total from SSA-1099-SM Box 5 on the tax return it lowered the refund by almost $300, so how is it that the SSA amount was not taxable and yet entering it on the tax return it appears it is taxable?

This is confusing.

The TurboTax program will calculate the amount of Social Security benefits that are taxable, if any.  The amount of benefits received is on your Form 1040 Line 6a and the taxable amount on Line 6b.  You only need to enter the amount in box 5 of the SSA-1099.

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099
