In T Tax desktop 2023 not able to enter Social Security Income and also not able to enter IRA distribution.
Double clicking on the "box" did nothing. Program is up to date.
Did get a temp fix by
Closing program.
Right clicking on the short cut to get Properties, then
Run as Administrator, THEN go to
VIEW FORMS, and select that form (1099- Soc Sec).
I was able to enter the Social Security Income there.
This has to be done on EACH program start, is a waste of time, and is not proper to say the least as there is other data needing the same "work around" to enter. I am a 20 year T Tax user with a strong accounting background and have reported on computational issues on home sales about 10 years ago. Those were fixed by T Tax experts within a week or so.
Not the case here.

It depends The Turbo Tax program is designed to enter tax information in the step by step version and not the forms. The forms were designed to assist the taxpayer in determining how certain income, deductions, credits were applied but was never intended to be a primary source in entering your data.
In some instances, data can be directly entered on a form but this is an exception and not the rule because Turbo Tax Desktop was never meant to be a forms-based program.
Go to federal taxes>wages and income>Retirement plans and Social Security. In this section, you have a place to enter your IRA distribution in the IRA section and then the Social Security in the Social Security. When you check the forms, the information should be there reported as it should be.
Thanks very much Dave F,
For whatever reason I was not able to enter data in the "step by step" which I agree with you is the primary data entry point. That is why I was using "forms" as an alternative entry point.
However, IF I toggled to "step by step" three times from forms, the "step by step" worked. So my data is now input. T Tax and Windows (10) are up to date and I did reinstall T Tax. My sense is there is a glitch unique to my hardware/software set up.
Thanks again for reaching out.

The instructions provided about adding Social Security are incorrect. I will keep looking for the answer. If anyone else has ideas, please reply.
If social Social Security income is your only income, you shouldn't need to file. If you wish to add it however:
Here is a screen how it looks like.
Updating 2024 Social security is not working. I click on "update" and the screen refreshes but returns to the wages & Income section. MacOS Sequoia 15.3.1 Running Turbotax Premier. I can Update my Pension 1099-R but not the Social Security 1099.
I restarted Turbotax to no avail.
Problem solved. I had supporting worksheet for Social security. I went to the forms section and deleted the worksheet for Box5, saved and then returned to EasyStep to enter the SSA-1099. A Programing error on Turbotax as worksheets tend to flow through from year to year without a hangup.
I hope this helps anyone
John
