I'm a new home owner and I'm single but my mom is on the mortgage. She's 87 and retired. Does she need to file as a home owner too? Do we both file the same form?

No, your mother does not need to file a return just because she is on the mortgage with you. If you are itemizing your taxes, and you pay the entire mortgage, then you would be able to claim the entire amounts on your 1098. If your mother is paying half the mortgage, then you would only be able to claim half of what is on the 1098.

If your mortgage interest and other itemized expenses are less than the standard deduction of $12,550 then you do not need to enter anything about your mortgage as it will have no impact on your return.
