Yes, You should have received a 1099-R that represents the rollover amount.

You will post this as a normal 1099-R.

To Post a 1099-R

Log into TurboTax

  1. Under Federal
  2. Select Wages & Income
  3. Scroll to and select IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  4. Now Edit or Add another 1099-R
  5. Enter your Broker or plan administrator information.
  6. Follow the interview.

As you go through the interview, it will ask:

What did you do with the money?

  • One option is that you rolled it over.

Again, continue to the end of the interview.

It never asked if I rolled it over….anywhere. I won’t be using TurboTax anymore. It’s gotten way too confusing. I’m not the only one. Google is full of my same questions.

Thanks for replying.

the interview does not ask me what I did with the money.  I received a full distribution of my IRA in 2024 and returned the distribution in 2025 within 60 days. There is no way to show the return of the money to an IRA. The 1099-R only shows a distribution.  How do I show the return to an IRA?

I entered a Form 1099-R with the distribution amount listed in box 1 and code 7 in box 7. On the next screen that said What Did You Do With The Money From (name of broker)? I chose the option the indicated I rolled the money to another traditional IRA or other retirement account and the distribution did not show as taxable on my return:

Can you clarify what you did differently from this?

I entered the same information for my 1099-R. A direct rollover from my employer to a traditional IRA and did not see this option. Showed that I owed thousands in penalties until I move the money out. Talked to 3 TTax reps who were unable to help :(

Do you have code G in box 7 of your Form 1099-R?

If yes, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  3. Enter the information from your 1099-R
  4. On the "Did you move this money from a 401(k) to a Roth 401(k)?" screen answer "No"
  5. On the "Did you move the money to a Roth IRA?" screen answer "No"

TurboTax will know this was a rollover because of code G.

Please be aware that the whole distribution will show as income in TurboTax on the summary screen which shows gross income, not taxable income. To verify that the entry is correct please look at form 1040 line 5b (taxable amount), it should show $0 and state ROLLOVER next to it.

To preview Form 1040 in TurboTax Online:

  1. Click on "Tax Tools" in the left menu
  2. Click "Tools"
  3. Click "View Tax Summary" in the Tool Center window
  4. Click on "Preview my 1040" on the left
