How do I indicate a Charitable Contribution from an IRA? Brokerage firms do not show Charitable Contributions on their 1099-R or exclude them from the 1099-R.

Thank you for your response.  I have more than one 1099-R, actually 4.  I will try deleting them all as instructed.  I have used QCD in previous years in Turbotax without problems.  This problem is new to me.

This is the best way to enter each 1099-R. Just remember when you enter these all, you must check IRA/SIMPLE/SEP box for each of the 1099's.

  1. log into turbo tax
  2. Go to federal>income and expenses
  3. Retirement plans and Social Security>show more
  4. Ira (401K), pension plan Withdrawals(1099R) Start
  5. After entering your 1099R you will scroll through several screens until you reach a screen that says Tell us if any of these uncommon situations apply
  6. Here you will indicate I transferred all or part of this money directly to charity

Note: You are only eligible to do this if you turned 70 1/2 during the year and would normally need to take a RMD situation.  If you are younger than 70 1/2, this option will not appear in the uncommon situation screen.

I have deleted all the 1099-Rs.  Line 4a and 4b of 1949 are blank.  Then I re-entered one 1099-R.  The Gross distribution is say $1,000.  I had it all donated to a charity.  The IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is checked.   The software acknowledges that the $1,000 is designated as non-taxable.   After selecting two options in the "About this Retirement Account" page, line 4a - IRA Distributions of Form 1040 shows 1,000 and line 4b-Taxable amount  shows 1,000 (which I expect to be blank)!  This does not make sense.

The two questions in the "About this Retirement Account" page are:

1. Was this withdrawal an RMD in 2020?  yes/no

I selected yes.  Actually RMD in 2020 was suspended.  Would it be better I select no?

2.  How much of the $1,000 I received applies to the RMD that need to be taken out?  all / part

I selected all

Does my choice of options cause the error?

Yes,  NONE of the distribution was a RMD and RMD NOT required.    The CARES act waived the 2020 RMD so it did not exist.
