(1.) TT asked me what year was stated on my 1099-R: 2021 or 2020
(2.) I selected 2020 because that's what it says "2020 Form 1099-R"
(3.) TT then said because it said "2020" I am not supposed to entered this 1099-R data into TT2020
(4.) Instead TT said I have to amend my Tax Year 2019 return and enter this 1099R data in that return.
(5.) Why? I dont' understand.
(6.) Also, for now I kept the 1099-R data in my TT for tax year 2020 and TT doesn't flag it as an error.
(7.) No idea what's going on.
(8.) Should i just keep this 2020 1099-R data in my TT return for tax year 2020 OR amend my tax year 2019 return with this 1099-R data? So confused.
9. Thank you to anyone in advance who can help me understand this.

Are you using the 2020 TurboTax desktop software or the 2019 TurboTax desktop software? Each tax year is a separate program and the 2020 Form 1099-R can only be entered when used with the 2020 TurboTax software.
I am using TT for tax year 2020
that's the issue - see my orig bullets vs me rehashing but this is DEF TT2020. My 2019 is on another computer that died.

Are you using a Windows PC or a Mac?
If a Windows PC have you updated the software to the latest release? Click on Online and Click on Check for Updates. If you get a message your software is up to date then you need a manual update. The question in the 2020 software for whether this is for 2019 or 2020 should have never been asked.
See this TurboTax support FAQ for manually updating the TurboTax software for Windows - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/updating/help/manually-update-turbotax-for-windows-software-basic-...
Delete the 1099-R and re-enter. Double check the box 7 code. You only get those questions if you accidentally entered a code P or R.
I'm on a Mac platform and EVERY day I restart TT so that it checks for updates before I start.
Bottom line question - if TT2020 is not calling this out as an ERROR during review - am I good to go with keeping the 2020 1099 R in my tax year 2020 return in TT?
and some who's an expert please (re) confirm if you can
I DEFINITELY DO NOT have to amend my tax year 2019 return with to include this 2020 1099-R
right?

NO. There is no reason to amend a 2019 tax return. The 2020 Form 1099-R can only be entered on a 2020 tax return.
ahhhhhhh
ok will redo
