We moved to Colorado in July 2023, and my wife began receiving her pension distributions around the same time. However, her 2024 1099-R form lists our Missouri address. We still own the property in Missouri, but we rent it out. Do we need to file a Missouri state tax return in addition to our Colorado return?

It depends on your income.

You do not have to file a Missouri return if you are not required to file a federal return. If you are required to file a federal return, you may not have to file a Missouri return if:

  • you are a resident and have less than $1,200 of Missouri adjusted gross income;
  • you are a nonresident with less than $600 of Missouri income; or
  • your Missouri adjusted gross income is less than the amount of your standard deduction plus your personal exemption.

Your rental income is considered Missouri-sourced income. Rental income is taxable on CO and MO return.

However, you may claim credit for taxes paid to another state on your CO return for income earned or recognized from sources in another state while you were a Colorado resident.

Pension income received while you were CO resident is taxable on your CO return.
