Does Box 2a actually have a zero in it, or is it blank?
It has a .00 in the box. Not blank
If you see a 0 (zero) in Box 2a of your 1099-R paper form, the entire distribution amount in Box 1 is nontaxable.
This link https://Is my distribution nontaxable if Box 2a on my 1099-R is 0 or blank has information you may find useful on this subject.
Does it matter that it’s .00, in 2a.
I don’t want to get in trouble.
Yes, when there is a zero in box 2a, that means the distribution is not taxable. If you still feel uncomfortable about that, contact your retirement plan's office to verify it.
