Question about name change

Ok so I just got married, having a baby, and I need to change things on my w2 form. I need to change my last name address and change it from filing exempt to filing 1 but my employer won't send me the information on how to do that. He won't do it himself either. How do I go about changing these things

Question about name change

Download a W-4 and give it to your employer. Change your name with social security. The IRS will expect that the name on your tax return will match the name that social security has for you.

Question about name change

Are you talking about your 2023 W-2?  And your 2023 tax return?  Or are you talking about the 2024 return you will file next year?    The IRS knows people get married and change their names.  Your Social Security number is the same, right?   You have to contact Social Security if you got married, and have SS change the name on your SS card.  Your SS number will be the same.    And...people move all the time---that is not news to the IRS.    When you prepare your tax return, use the information that is accurate.

As for next year----your employer will need to change your last name on next year's W-2, and use your correct address.   You will enter your correct mailing address, correct filing status, etc. on your own tax return.  You say you "just got married" so presumably next year you will file a joint return with your spouse.

As for your W-4----the document you give to the employer to tell them how much tax to withhold---you can give the employer a new W-4.    Hopefully you were never claiming to be "exempt" from taxes since that would have been wrong.

Question about name change

You are mixing up your W-2 and your W-4.

Your W-2 is the form that your employer gives you at the end of the year showing how much you made and how much tax was withheld. You use your W-2 when you file your tax return.

Your W-4 is the form that you give to your employer with information that the employer uses to calculate how much tax to withhold from your pay during the year. You fill out the W-4 and give it your employer.

You don't change your W-2. You can change your W-4 by filling out a new one and giving it to your employer. If you got married in 2024, that doesn't change anything on your 2023 W-2.

Make sure your employer has your correct name and current address in their payroll and personnel records. That does not come from the W-2 or the W-4. Ask the payroll department and the HR department how to update your name and address.

Question about name change

talk to your HR or payroll department if you want to chnage your name and/or address.
After that goes through, then you can submit a new W-4 .
