I believe my pensions are from defined benefits retirement plans and should not be taxed by Alabama. Is that in the R-1099 I received?

Most pension benefits, including those from defined benefits plans are tax-exempt in Alabama. It won't say it on your 1099-R form, but if you enter your 1099-R in the federal section and indicate that the distribution is from a qualified plan, it will not be transferred over to your AL return.
