My wife's mother died in 2016 and a Traditional IRA was cashed in. State and federal taxes were withheld. We have a W-4P form showing the amount. How do we report it?

There should be a 1099R for the IRA distribution.  That 1099R needs to be reported on the tax return.

The W4P is a form that just shows how much taxes to withhold.  That W4P does not get entered in TurboTax, only the 1099R.

To enter the 1099R:

To enter pension and annuity Payments (1099-R)

  • Click on Federal Taxes
  • Click on Wages and Income
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button
