Thank you. I reviewed your token.
Please be aware you are not allowed to convert RMDs. Therefore, you need to ensure you do not apply the whole distribution towards your RMD.
Please go back to the retirement section and edit the 1099-R with code 7:
Make sure you checked the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box when you entered your Form 1099-R. Please click continue after you entered all Form 1099-Rs then you should see the the value question.
Thanks, but the only way I could get it to work was to delete the 1099-R and start over, because the question that would populate line 6 never appeared initially. When I deleted and re-entered, it worked. Now, however the 8606 still shows an error-line 8, where the amount of Roth conversion is supposed to be indicated, is also blank. I assume there is supposed to be a point where this question is also asked, but like before, the question never comes up. Looks like a Turbo Tax glitch to me. Is there any way to notify them?
Please follow these steps to enter the conversion if you use TurboTax Online:
In TurboTax Desktop:
I am using the online version. I go to Wages & Income, Here's Your 1099-R Info, edit an already imported 1099-R. Scroll through the selections and questions to check accuracy. Whether I have either manually imported or have Fidelity import the information, I never get to a screen that says “Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion”. I have tried deleting the 1099-R and re-entering the info and same problem, the question never comes up. Never any question about conversion.
What is your code in box 7? To confirm this was from traditional IRA to Roth IRA? You verify that the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box was checked? Did you try to enter the Form 1099-R manually (without uploading PDF/ importing)?
If this doesn't fix your issue then it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2024" file that is experiencing this issue. You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Online:
We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.
Thank you very much for your persistence with this issue! I have been working on it forever!
Yes, I have tried deleting the 1099-R and redoing with manual entry. Tried this several times, both uploading from Fidelity and doing it manually.
The code in box 7 is 7. The IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is checked. The gross distribution number in box 1 is a combination of a required IRA distribution and a Roth conversion from the same account.

Thank you so much! I think some of my confusion was that it wasn't always clear whether "this distribution" was referring to the total amount in box 1 of the 1099-R, or the RMD from the account whose number was provided on the form. In my case, the box 1 amount was the total of the RMD from that account, an extra amount to account for the RMD from a managed IRA from Fidelity that I did not draw from (thus no form), and my Roth conversion. Interestingly, I didn't have a problem with this last year. Did the questions change? In any event, I think they could be re-written to be clearer in similar situations. In case they are the same next year, I have copied all the steps and answers to keep in my file so that I won't have this issue again.
