Military retirement qualified or non-qualified?

Is my military retirement considered qualified or non-qualified? If it is non-qualified, do I check the "Pension Plan" box on the W-2 [from my employer] page labeled "Do any of these uncommon situations apply to this W-2?" ? I receive a 1099 from the military pay office.

Military retirement qualified or non-qualified?

Two separate issues:

1) the military 1099-R is a "Non-qualified Plan".

...(My desktop software shows that in a list of what is considered Non-qualified too...not sure what Online shows..sometimes you have to click on a "Learn More" to see it described).

2)  A W-2 is not a 1099-R  and there is rarely any connection between the two.  The W-2 from either DFAS, or a separate employer (civilian or state or Federal) has it's own box to check about that employer having a Pension plan in place.  That box is not connected to your 1099-R form and only refers to that particular W-2 employer.  Wait for your W-2 and use whatever is on your paper W-2  (sometimes a W-2 says "yes" to that box...which means it is "x"d)   It will be "x"d on your W-2 if the company a has a defined-benefit Pension plan, or you contributed to a 401k, 403b or other defined contribution Pension plan .. but refers only to  That Particular Employer.
