Here are some possible reasons why this isn't showing up in your NC return.

The most common reason for this error is a mismatch between your Federal 1099-R and the NC State Section. Here is how to troubleshoot the "invisible" entry:

  1. The "Source of Retirement" Box: On your Federal 1099-R entry screen, look for a dropdown or checkbox that asks for the "Source of Retirement." If this isn't specifically marked as "Military" or "United States Government," the North Carolina section won't "pull" the data correctly to apply the deduction. This will appear as a followup question after you enter the 1099R.
  2. The Schedule S (Subtractions) Step: NC uses Form D-400 Schedule S to handle deductions. Even if you entered the 1099-R in the Federal section, many programs require you to manually "claim" the deduction again in the North Carolina State "Subtractions from Income" or "Military Retirement" section.
  3. Look for a line that mentions: "Retirement benefits received by a retired member of the US Armed Forces."

The "Bailey" Trap: Don't confuse the general Military Retirement deduction with the "Bailey Settlement" deduction. While military retirees can fall under Bailey if they were vested by August 12, 1989, most modern retirees use the new 2021 military deduction instead. If you selected "Bailey" but don't meet the 1989 date, the software might be voiding your entry.
