Whether your public pension is taxable in Michigan depends on your age:

  • Not taxable if born before 1946
  • Limited subtraction of $20,000 ($40,000 for joint filers) if born 1946 through 1952
  • Not eligible for subtraction if born after 1952

For complete pension deduction information, please see Michigan Income Tax for Retirement Benefits.

TurboTax did my Michigan return, but I was charged tax on my teacher's retirement.  this has never happened before.  Will TurboTax fix this before the filing deadline?  Born before 1946

@tica Make sure you indicated you have a Michigan Public Pension when you enter your 1099-R in your Federal return.  You could delete/re-enter your 1099-R to make sure you get the proper follow-up questions.

Click this link for info on How to Enter a 1099-R.

This link has info from Michigan Dept. of Treasury about taxable pensions.
