I have lived in Japan for nearly a decade, I'm self-employed, and I pay into the Japanese pension. How do I file so as not to be dual taxed on US social security?

Japan and the US have a "totalization" agreement to eliminate dual social security taxation. How should I enter my self-employment income into TurboTax so as to avoid being double taxed?

Here's how to remove self-employment tax due to a totalization agreement:

  1. Type sch se in Search (magnifying glass) in the top right corner
  2. Select Jump to sch se
  3. On the screen “Self-Employment Tax,” tap Make Adjustments
  4. On “Enter Income Adjustments” enter a negative value equal to your SE income on Other SE NonFarm Profit (Loss), then Continue.
  5. On “Self-Employment Tax” you should see the following message, “That’s all we need for our calculation of self-employment tax, and you don’t owe self-employment tax for 2022

You will also need to print and mail your 1040. Write "Exempt, see attached statement" on Schedule 2, Part II, line 4 (Self-employment tax) and attach your exemption certificate.

How do I print and mail my return in TurboTax Online?
