Say all of it is the RMD.  When you turn 73  it will ask you if it is the RMD.  Say yes.  Anything your pension pays you is considered to be the  RMD.  Traditional pensions automatically fulfill the rules of an RMD. So for the RMD question put in the same amount as box 1.

I’m having the same issue… keeps looping back for me to enter an amount for RMD for a military retirement account.  7 is entering for normal distribution too. Any way to bypass?

To complete the tax return, you can indicate that the entire amount is RMD.  This is not reported to the IRS, TurboTax just uses the information to determine if you must pay the penalty for not taking the RMD pm the Form 5329.  @Maca2

Thank you so much for your reply. So just to clarify I will enter the full amount listed in the 1099R. Extremely helpful!

You must say all of it and enter the full amount as RMD and full amount as RMD taken. Thank you for your service.

When I put the entire amount as RMD I must pay almost $7000 in taxes on my retired pay. I have already paid taxes on the Amount... what other options?

Please clarify a few things for me. Are you being charged taxes on the federal return (where this amount is normally taxable) or on a state return(where military retirement is often tax-free). If state, which state?

"I have already paid taxes on the Amount" - what does this mean? When and where did you pay taxes on this amount?

Are you being charge a penalty because you have not taken a sufficient RMD? This is unlikely, but may be an issue with what you have entered. On line 8, Schedule 2 (1040), do you have an amount here?
