I have a 1099-R from the Office of Personnel Management. How do I exclude this Federal pension income from state taxation?

When you enter it initially, in the follow-up questions you need to select that it was from a Government retirement system.

 

 

 

You may have to delete your Form 1099-R and reenter it in order to get this box to popup again.

 

Follow these steps to delete your 1099-R in TurboTax:

  1. Go to Form 1099-R
  2. Select the trash can next to your 1099-R and then answer Yes

Here's where to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return
  2. In the Federal section, select Wages & Income
  3. Scroll to locate Retirement Plans and Social Security, and select Show more
  4. Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)

You can also find the 1099-R section using the Search option in TurboTax. Open your return, enter 1099-r in the search bar, and select the Jump to 1099-r link.

We did that, and we did not get that question. It's counting it as taxable for state, even though it describes the income as not taxable.

After you enter your Form 1099-R, you are asked several questions.  You have to select the appropriate box. This will trigger your pension exclusion. See below:

I have a 1099-R from the Office of Personnel Management. How do I exclude this Federal pension income from state taxation?

For the distribution-from we don't get the selection screen at the end of the 1099-R. We filed KS outside of Turbotax because we couldn't figure out how to fix this. So, we are ok for 2022. We still want to resolve for next year. It Turbotax we get this page at the beginning of the 1099-R and select as indicated:
