The backdoor Roth IRA conversion is a two-step process:
Please follow the instructions in this TurboTax Help article on how to enter a backdoor Roth IRA conversion.
Same situation but need clarification, reading Turbo Tax online instructions says you get a 1099-R and input the conversion via Wages & Income process with 1099-R. I have also read elsewhere to just enter it via 8606.
Issue: Feb 2025 contributed to Traditional IRA (non-deductible due to income limits for 2024. Easy to document contribution in Turbo Tax. Instructed institution to do immediate back door conversion to Roth IRA for 2024. Institution complied as requested. But have not received a 1099-R for "contribution year 2024" since I just did this in 2025 but it is for 2024 tax year. Now what should I expect / do?
Question: Do I file an extension and wait for institution to give me a 1099-R? Can they just generate a 1099-R mid-year for last year? Is there a way to document in Turbo Tax via 8606? It doesn't change the return since the contribution was non-deductible but would like to document it correctly.
Upon reporting a Trad IRA contribution (non-deductible) on your tax return, you can then also report a Roth conversion of the contributed amount for net tax of zero, unless your IRA previously had value exceeding basis.
In that case, it can't be done tax free.
to report a non-deductible contribution for 2024 , 2024 Form 8606 must be filed.
The conversion happened in 2025. You report it on your 2025 tax return.
