I do not want to take a the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit because I want to file free; the credit is less than it will cost me to upgrade to Deluxe.

Why won't TurboTax let you adjust that?

Go to your W2 and remove the amount in box 12 with Code D. This will remove the credit. You might also need to delete the Saver's Credit Form.

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.

  1. Select Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the Pop-Up menu select Delete a Form
  4. This will give you all of the forms in your return
  5. Scroll down to the form you want to delete
  6. Select the Form
  7. Click on Delete

Always use extreme caution when deleting information from your tax return.  There could be unintended consequences.

One other way that is supposed to work, is to indicate you were a student during 2023...either on the My Info page, or by going thru the Savers Credit Q&A.  Yeah, it's lying to the software, but doesn't have any other affect (other than perhaps getting more annoying questions about whether you want any education credits).
