I am adding info from my 1099-NEC, and I keep getting an error message in box 5 for state (can not enter the same state twice, please change or merge rows)

This error appears when you entered the same state information in twice on the same form.  You should go back to your 1099-NEC and correct this.  To go back to your form:

  • Open your return
  • Go to your federal return and open Wages & Income
  • Go to Self-Employment and edit
  • Scroll down to your Form 1099-NEC and click the pencil to edit

Delete the information for box 5, make sure you only have the state listed once.  This should take care of the error message.

i have the same error but even after deleting the state (in either the first or second row), it still shows an error.

You would need to delete the Form 1099-NEC and re-enter it. Assuming you did not have any state tax withheld, you can leave the state information off of the form entry.
