HSA - PYC Entry?

How do I enter a PYC (Prior Year Contribution) to my HSA on TurboTax desktop version? Example: I have made a 2025 contribution in 2026 (prior to 4/15/26). The "interview" questions do not prompt for entry of any cash contributions and only takes the amount contributed as reported on the W-2. The only other way to enter adjustments that I can see are for company funded contributions. I did not have any HSA distributions.

HSA - PYC Entry?

If your contribution for the prior year is a "personal" contribution (i.e., made directly to the HSA custodian), then on the screen titled "Let's enter [your name]'s HSA contributions", add this special contribution to the second line (in addition to any personal contributions made during 2025).

If your contribution for the prior year was made through your employer, then in the HSA interview, proceed to "Do any of these situations apply to "[Your name]?" and click on the third line, "[Your name] had other company contributions that weren't reported to their W-2 or apply to a previous year". Hit Continue.

On the next screen, on the second line "Contributions made in 2026 for tax year 2025", enter the amount of HSA contributions made through/by your employer in 2026 for 2025.

HSA - PYC Entry?

Thanks for the guidance, however, I am not presented with that page. I see what you are referring to if I mark my wife as having an HSA that screen comes up but I cannot get it to present for me (she does not have a separate HSA).

To further clarify, the progression of screens goes from:

Do any of these situations apply to (me)? none do  >> What type of HDHP coverage did (I) have during 2025? Family >> Your HSA Summary

HSA - PYC Entry?

OK, i just went into the actual form 8889-T and entered it for box 2 (via the smart worksheet).

HSA - PYC Entry?

We have had an issue this year in that a few tax returns have inexplicably failed to display certain screens in the HSA interview. So far as I can see, the only workaround is to do the HSA Reset (see below), and start over on the HSA interview.

I see that you did an override, and, yes, line 2 is the correct place. So do your other numbers look OK (no excess HSA contributions)?

I will note that I try to have taxpayers avoid using overrides because doing overrides can (1) negate the Tax Accuracy Guarantee, and (2) prevent the ability to e-file. I say "can", not "will" because I don't know exactly how your return will perform.

However, the ability to do overrides is there exactly for situations like this. So if you can e-file, you're good (although I can't speak to the Tax Accuracy Guarantee until it comes to an actual claim)...

But if you have issues with e-filing, and you are willing to try the HSA Reset, here it is.

HSA RESET

***Reset***

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)

*** Desktop/Windows***

3. Go to the upper right and click on Forms, and

4. Select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the form’s screen.

*** Desktop/Mac***

3. Switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon.

4. From the menu, select the form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)) you want to remove (if you don't see it, select Open Form at the top). From the Forms menu, select Remove [form name].

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....
