How do I enter an RMD amount into TT for an IRA that was not distributed? (No 1099R)

If you took this RMD from another IRA then please see these instructions for TurboTax Online:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter your 1099-R
  4. Continue until "How much of the $XXXXX was a RMD?" screen and select "The entire distribution was an RMD"  /or select "Only part of this distribution was a RMD" and enter the amount of RMD (if this distribution includes RMD for other IRA accounts then you included the amount here)
  5. Enter the RMD amount for this account on the "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)" screen
  6. On the "Review your 1099-R info" screen click "Continue"
  7. On the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen select "An IRA..."
  8. On the "Total RMD for all other IRAs" screen enter the RMD from your other IRAs (where you didn't take a distribution from).

In TurboTax Desktop:

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter your 1099-R
  3. On the "Required Minimum Distribution" screen enter RMD for this account
  4. On the "How much of This Distribution Applied to your December 31, 2024 RMD" select "The entire distribution applied…"  / or select "Some of this distribution…" and enter the RMD amount (if this distribution includes RMD for other IRA accounts then you included the amount here)
  5. On the "Your 1099-R Entries" screen click "Continue"
  6. On the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen select "An IRA..."
  7. On the "Total RMD for all other IRAs" screen enter the RMD from your other IRAs (where you didn't take a distribution from).

You are not required to file Form 5329 if you met all of your RMD for 2024. TurboTax will enter the information in the "Additional Retirement Account Smart Worksheet" to check that you met the RMD for 2024 but this will not be sent to the IRS.

If you didn't take any RMD for 2024 then please take it as soon as possible. TurboTax can help you fill out the waiver if you have a reasonable cause:

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  3. Continue until the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen select "An IRA..."
  4. On the "Total RMD for all other IRAs" screen enter the RMD from your other IRAs (where you didn't take a distribution from).
  5. TurboTax will walk you through the questions to apply for the waiver.

Thank for such a detailed reply.  Unfortunately, the  "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen never appears.  I tried several times but this screen doesn't show up in my TT Desktop version.  Any suggestions?

First please make sure you have updated your software

To clarify, did you take any RMD and have Form 1099-R? If yes, then try deleting and reentering the Form 1099-R and make sure you click continue after adding all Form 1099-Rs.

If you did not take any RMD and need to file Form 5329 for the missed RMD but do not get the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen then you can switch to Form Mode:

  1. Enter the forms mode and click on "Open Form" and type "5329".
  2. Scroll down to Part IX line 52 and enter the RMD amount that should have been taken. On line 53 enter the amount of the RMD that was actually taken (probably zero if it was missed).
  3. Then in the box right under line 53 "Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet" enter the same amount as line 52 (the RMD amount) under A.
  4. Click the "Explanation" button and enter the reason for missing the RMD and your statement requesting a waiver.
