Georgia Retirement Exclusion for 2024

The retirement income exclusion is very complex (made even more so for a part-time resident in Georgia.)

I understand that TurboTax is trying to exclude the income Georgia doesn’t need for seniors (over 65), but it is not clear whether to actually input social security, capital gains, pensions, and IRA distributions or leave them off the Georgia forms. The reference to the Ga Tax Booklet is no help either because it is unclear.

Thus:

The first page says, here’s what Georgia handles differently (presumably pulled from the Federal forms): Retirement Income Exclusion — not sure where this number comes from

Retirement Income Exempt in GA — this appears to be my IRA distribution

Social Security — this is self explanatory

Then we have to allocate between Georgia and the other state of residence, but the instructions are misleading: TT says: make adjustments if the actual Georgia amounts are different, otherwise enter zero, but the place in the column to enter zero is titled “Other State” so it is really asking for the amount not pulled by TT. I can ignore the instructions and just enter the total for the other state.

Then TT takes me to adjustments to Georgia Income and says I need to allocate a number between Georgia and the other state (it doesn’t actually say the amount is the total of social security and IRA and pension distributions — had to figure this out). And there is no form to actual enter the allocations on. The system just shows a copy of Schedule 1 for Georgia, but not where to put the difference.

I actually am having to ditch TT for this and fill out the paper forms for Georgia to understand what to do. And I am still confused and going to the Georgia Tax Center to ask how to do this.
