Social Security benefits are not always taxable on the federal return. It really depends on your other income. Only if your Modified Adjusted Gross Income exceeds the base amount for your filing status ($32,000 for Married Filing Jointly, otherwise $25,000), at least part of your Social Security income becomes taxable. If you don't exceed that base amount, benefits are not considered taxable income.
