Download from Amazon

When i downloaded from Amazon, and launched the product it never asked me to enter the 16 digit code.

Is that because it was stored in the amzn account? Are the 16 digit codes only associated with each download or can they work on other downloads. I ask that because originally i bought from Big Home Tax and it had cancelled codes. I then uninstalled that and bought directly from amazon... but i see that my old code from Big home tax is still in my account there.
