I made a little over $3400 for some writing where I received royalties from a theatre. They sent me a 1099 with box "7" marked. I am over 72 and claiming social security. Is this correct? Do I pay self-employment tax on this money or should this be in a different category? Seems strange to have to claim it as self-employment if I'm already receiving ss.

Yes, there is no age at which you do not pay into Social Security, either as an employee or as an Independent Contractor.
